The Flamingo Revolution is the name Albanians have given to a growing protest movement about nature, transparency, corruption and the country's future. What began with resistance to luxury development plans around Sazan Island and the Vjosa-Narta lagoon has become a wider demand: Albania must develop without selling its public trust, protected landscapes or democratic voice.

Why the flamingo?

The pink flamingo is more than a memorable protest symbol. The Vjosa-Narta lagoon is an important wetland on Albania's Adriatic coast and a habitat for flamingos and many other species. Environmental groups say the area is internationally significant and warn that large-scale construction could permanently damage it.

Protesters adopted the flamingo as a symbol of something beautiful, vulnerable and unmistakably Albanian. Pink flamingo costumes, signs and artwork turned a complicated planning dispute into a message the whole country could recognise.

Why Sazan and Narta matter

Sazan is Albania's only island. Together with the nearby Narta lagoon and surrounding coast, it represents a rare combination of history, public land, nature and national identity. Plans for high-end resorts and marinas have therefore raised questions that go far beyond tourism.

Supporters of the development argue that major investment can create jobs and strengthen tourism. Protesters and environmental organisations are asking different questions: Who benefits? What protections remain? Was the process transparent? And can development be called progress if the public loses control of places that belong to Albania's shared heritage?
